Chapter 19 - CLAUDIA FINALLY LOOKS AT THE NUMBERS
Claudia had believed Vera’s version of the club.
Belladonna was dying.
Amelia’s $180,000 cash-out was generous.
Claudia would sacrifice by taking control.
Then independent appraisal arrived.
She called Julian.
Not me.
Good.
“How much redevelopment value did Mother know about?”
Julian answered only what the documents allowed.
Enough.
Then Claudia asked to see the internal report she had previously skimmed.
She had received it.
Had not read assumptions carefully.
That did not absolve her.
But her role changed.
She had known there were two valuations.
She had not understood how large the difference could become.
Then she emailed Vera months earlier:
Are we sure Amelia isn’t getting cheated?
Vera replied:
She is being protected from risk.
Claudia accepted.
Why?
Because the answer benefited her.
That was the moral failure.
Not secret mastermind knowledge.
Convenient ignorance.
At mediation, Claudia said:
“I should have asked more.”
Dana Keene answered:
“You asked once.”
Claudia looked down.
“Yes.”
“You stopped when the answer served you.”
“Yes.”
That was the line.
Convenient ignorance is still a choice.
Then Claudia offered:
She would withdraw her request for consolidated trust voting authority.
She would not accept Belladonna shares distributed from Amelia’s branch.
She would support an independent co-trustee.
Good.
Did that fix the wedding?
No.
Did it repair Amelia?
No.
But litigation positions changed.
Vera felt betrayed.
