Chapter 24 - CLAUDIA TESTIFIES ABOUT THE EMPTY CHAIR
Claudia took the stand.
Wedding ring on.
No bridal gown.
No audience of relatives.
She admitted:
She knew Amelia’s place card had been removed.
She knew Vera wanted the child away from the head table.
“Why?”
“Mother said it blurred the family line.”
“What did you understand that to mean?”
“That Belladonna was supposed to pass through me, not Amelia.”
“Did you agree?”
“At the time, mostly.”
Then:
“Why tell Rafael to take his daughter and leave your family’s club?”
Claudia looked down.
“I was humiliated.”
“By Amelia?”
“No.”
“Then why direct the statement at her?”
“Because Rafael had just hit Mother.”
“You spoke before the slap?”
Silence.
The timeline mattered.
She had told me to leave before I struck Vera.
Claudia corrected.
“I was angry that he had entered and taken over the room.”
“How had he taken over?”
“He picked Amelia up.”
That answer sounded as bad as it was.
Then the club plan.
“Did you know about the $180,000 proposed settlement?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know about higher redevelopment valuation?”
“Yes.”
“Did you understand the difference?”
“Not fully.”
“Did you ask?”
“Once.”
“Why stop?”
Claudia cried.
“Because I wanted Belladonna.”
There.
Then:
“Why?”
“Because it was the one thing that was supposed to be mine.”
The courtroom became quiet.
Not legally persuasive.
Human.
Then Celeste.
Her sister.
“She left. She built a life. Everyone still chased her approval.”
“Did Amelia do that?”
“No.”
“Then why punish Amelia?”
Claudia looked at me.
Then down.
“I made her carry something that belonged to me.”
That was the closest thing to accountability I had heard from her.
Then my purchase.
“Do you believe Rafael stole Belladonna from you?”
“No.”
Vera turned sharply.
Claudia continued:
“I believe Mother let it reach default because she thought family history mattered more than lender documents.”
Julian almost smiled.
Then:
“Do you support Vera remaining sole trustee?”
“No.”
That ended the emotional alliance.
Not family love.
