Chapter 12 - THE SLAP CASE

Vera’s cheek bruised.

She had a sore shoulder from falling into the cake table.

No fracture.

No concussion.

The video was clear.

I slapped her after Amelia was already behind me.

No self-defense.

No defense of child at that exact moment.

I accepted diversion on a misdemeanor assault charge.

Conditions:

Anger-management course.

Restitution for Vera’s documented medical expenses attributable to my strike.

No unlawful direct contact.

Completion.

Dismissal afterward.

An old associate laughed when he heard.

“You’re paying the woman who threw food on your kid?”

“I’m paying what the court requires because I hit her.”

“She deserved it.”

“That isn’t the legal test.”

He shook his head.

Men like him always love rules until rules point inward.

My instructor was named Martin Hayes.

Retired family-court mediator.

First session:

“What did your daughter see?”

“Her grandmother attack her.”

“And then?”

“Me attack her grandmother.”

He nodded.

“What did you teach?”

I hated the question.

“That the strongest person decides when violence is justified.”

“Is that what you want?”

“No.”

Then:

“What did strength look like instead?”

“Remove Amelia.”

“Call security.”

“Yes.”

“Document.”

“Yes.”

“Police.”

“Yes.”

“Control yourself.”

I looked at him.

“That one was implied.”

He smiled.

I attended every session.

No private arrangement.

No missing weeks because I was busy.

My daughter had watched me fail.

I could let her watch me correct.
