Chapter 9 - THE RESULT ENVELOPE

North County Genetic Services still had records.
Archived.
Not full raw samples.
Documentation.
Chain of custody.
Final report.
The court ordered a certified copy sent under seal.
Naomi received notice.
We would open it in a conference with Garrick’s counsel and guardian ad litem.
Why guardian ad litem?
Because the visitation case now intersected with private genetic information about Sorrel.
The judge appointed Elise Warren to protect his interests and recommend how much should enter public filings.
Good.
No family spectacle.
The day before opening, Garrick made an offer.
He would stipulate:
He had tested.
He knew result.
He would provide complete relevant family medical history.
In exchange:
Result remains sealed permanently and Bramwell agrees never to tell Sorrel Garrick is biological father before age eighteen.
I stared.
“No.”
Naomi asked:
“Which part?”
“Age eighteen.”
Good.
Not refusing privacy.
Refusing Garrick control over disclosure.
A child should learn age-appropriately with professionals, not discover at eighteen from a file.
Elise agreed.
“Late disclosure can be harmful.”
Then Garrick revised:
No disclosure before age twelve.
Still.
No.
Therapist should guide based on development.
Not his shame.
Then Mother offered to withdraw her visitation petition if I agreed to resume monthly unsupervised weekend visits voluntarily.
No.
Again:
guarantees first.
Accountability later.
Then the result arrived.
Sealed.
I slept almost none that night.
Sorrel woke once.
Found me at kitchen table.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“You sad?”
“A little.”
“Because paper?”
“Yes.”
He climbed onto my lap.
“You still Dad tomorrow?”
The question nearly killed me.
“Yes.”
“Even if paper?”
“Yes.”
He pressed his face into my shirt.
“Okay.”
That was all.
The next morning, Naomi, Garrick’s attorney, Elise and I sat around a table.
Garrick attended by video.
The lab director joined to authenticate.
The envelope lay unopened.

The central secret had been waiting six years.
Now there was nowhere left for any of us to hide.
