Chapter 25 - THE LETTER AINSLEY LEFT FOR ME
Jonathan Bell testified only about authenticated estate documents.
No drama.
Then Ainsley’s letter to me entered under seal.

If you are reading this, I waited too long.
There is no version of that sentence where I am brave.
Then:
Sorrel’s biological father is Garrick.
The courtroom went still even though everyone already knew.

Then:
Garrick tested because I insisted. He knows.

Then the most important line:
Do not let biology turn Sorrel into evidence for anybody’s guilt.
I looked at Mother.
Then Garrick.
Then myself.
All three of us had done exactly that in different ways.
Mother:
evidence of Ainsley’s betrayal.
Garrick:
evidence of his shame.
Me:
evidence against Garrick in a family message.
Ainsley had known us.
Then:
You are his father because you have been. Garrick is part of the truth he deserves someday, not a replacement for you.
There.
No ambiguity.
Then:
If Eudora learns and suddenly changes how she treats him, do not confuse relief with repair.
I almost laughed through tears.
She predicted Mother too.
Then final relevant line:
Sorrel should never have to earn belonging by proving whose blood he carries.
The judge stopped reading.
Enough.
No dead-wife moral domination over the case.
Just her contemporaneous intent.
Then Mother testified again briefly.
Her lawyer asked:
“Did you know Ainsley believed this about you?”
“No.”
“Does it make you angry?”
“Yes.”
Honest.
Then:
“Does that anger belong with Sorrel?”
“No.”
Progress.
Then closing arguments.
Mother’s side:
Do not sever a real grandparent relationship because of terrible but treatable conduct.
Our side:
Do not convert a relationship into guaranteed unsupervised access before the child is ready.
No one argued Mother should disappear forever.
