Chapter 21 - MOTHER’S LAST BAD MOVE

Mother sent Sorrel a letter without approval.

Not directly.

Through my aunt Marjorie, who thought she was helping.

The envelope said:

For Sorrel.

Marjorie gave it to me first.

Good.

I opened with therapist permission.

Inside:

Grandma loves you and will always be your blood family no matter what anyone says.

I closed my eyes.

Still.

Blood.

Then:

I hope someday no one keeps us apart.

That was worse.

It placed blame.

Implied I was keeping them apart unfairly.

I did not give it to Sorrel.

I sent it to evaluator.

Mother’s lawyer apologized.

Mother said:

“I thought reassurance was good.”

Evaluator:

“You used the exact frame under dispute.”

Then Mother lost the expanded two-hour visit temporarily.

Back to therapeutic office.

Consequence.

Not total cutoff.

She was furious.

Then, to her credit, she did not file emergency motions.

She went back to therapy.

At next session with Sorrel she said:

“I wrote something I should not have sent.”

He had not seen it.

Good.

“What?”

“Grown-up mistake.”

He nodded.

“Like mud bag?”

I almost laughed from observation room.

Mother said:

“Different kind.”

Then:

“Did Dad get class?”

“Yes.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Children love symmetry.

Then Mother did something new.

She asked:

“Can we draw?”

No family talk.

Twenty minutes of dinosaurs.

That session went well.

The evaluator later said:

“She may be learning that relationship can exist without defining it every five minutes.”

Exactly.

Then final hearing date set.

Four weeks.

Chapters 23–26 would decide.

Before that, one more settlement.

Mother offered:

One supervised visit monthly guaranteed.

No overnights.

No summer blocks.

She would withdraw rest.

That was far more reasonable.

I almost accepted.

Naomi asked:

“Why not?”

“Because she still wants guarantee.”

“Guarantees are not inherently bad.”

That stopped me.

A court schedule can protect a healthy relationship too.

Was I turning anti-control into anti-structure?

Maybe.

We took the offer to Dr. Lila and Elise.

They recommended:

Do not settle yet.

Mother’s recent letter showed risk.

Complete hearing.

Good.

Not my anger deciding.

Evidence.
