Chapter 26 - NORA’S FIRST BOARD MEETING

At twenty-one, Nora attended her first child-trust governance meeting as an adult beneficiary observer.

The trust no longer held controlling shares.

She studied environmental economics.

Of course.

She wore jeans.

No power suit.

Samuel’s successor explained the portfolio.

Carter Land & Water shares:

eighteen percent.

Diversified funds.

Municipal bonds.

Conservation investments.

Cash reserve.

Nora asked:

“Can I sell the Carter shares?”

“Yes, subject to trust rules and market considerations.”

“Would everyone freak out?”

“Some.”

She smiled.

“Good to know.”

She did not sell all.

She reduced gradually.

Kept five percent because she believed long-term water governance mattered and wanted observer rights after training.

Her choice.

No dynasty requirement.

At the meeting, an old director said:

“Your grandfather Arthur intended you to preserve family influence.”

Nora answered:

“He also created a structure because he didn’t trust his children with influence.”

The room went silent.

I nearly laughed.

My daughter had learned documents.

She did not worship them.
