Chapter 20 - THE PHONE UNDER THE FLOWERPOT

Police returned my old phone after appeals preserved copies.
The device was cracked.
Mud in the charging port.
Battery degraded.
I held it.
Claire asked:
“What are you going to do?”
“I don’t know.”
The recording had saved context.
Without it, Daniel’s story might have carried more weight.
Claire still witnessed enough.
Physical evidence existed.
But the recording mattered.
That did not mean I wanted to keep the object.
I copied personal photographs.
Then asked Rachel whether official evidence retained the recording.
Yes.
I recycled the phone through a secure service.

No dramatic smashing.
