Chapter 12 - DANIEL’S FIRST APOLOGY
Daniel sent a letter through counsel.
I could decline.
I read it.
Emily,
I frightened you.
Bad opening.
Too small.
Then:
I pushed you.
I prevented you from leaving.
I raised the stick.
I told other people you were unstable when I knew many of the incidents I cited had explanations.
Better.
He admitted debt.
The side compensation.
The acquisition pressure.
Then:
I never planned to hurt Nora.
I stopped reading.
Later I continued.
He said he believed keeping me home protected the pregnancy from “chaotic legal conflict.”
There it was.
Control renamed protection.
He insisted the capacity file began as legitimate contingency planning.
That may have been true.
Then:
Once you resisted the trust acknowledgment, I began documenting things in ways that supported the outcome I wanted.
Actual accountability.
Then the trench.
I saw the phone and thought if you left with it, everything would collapse.
So he pushed a pregnant woman into mud.
Not because he lost awareness.
Because consequences frightened him more than my safety.
He ended:
I love our daughter.
I looked at my belly.
Love did not decide access.
I sent no response.
Family court had not yet entered because Nora was unborn.
Protective orders governed contact with me.
After birth, custody would be determined.
Daniel’s parents were dead.
Vanessa requested no prenatal contact.
Good.
Claire asked:
“Do you want him at the birth?”
“No.”
Immediate.
Clear.
Hospital security created a plan.
Daniel’s photo.
No visitation.
No information release.
No automatic husband access beyond what law required.
I updated my healthcare proxy.
Claire.
Not Daniel.
State law allowed spouses certain roles absent documents, but my explicit directive removed ambiguity where permitted.
I chose my sister? I had none.
Claire was friend.
That was enough.
She signed.
“Do I get to name the baby if you’re unconscious?”
“No.”
“Cruel.”
“Her name is Nora.”
