Chapter 25 - DANIEL’S ACCOUNTABILITY
Daniel never returned to Carter Land & Water.
His professional restrictions and reputation made that unrealistic.
He eventually worked in supply-chain administration for a regional manufacturer after release.
No executive control.
No family board.
At fifty-two, he asked Nora—now fifteen—for permission to send her a longer letter.
She agreed.
He wrote:
I spent years telling myself I wanted to protect you from losing your future.
The truth is I was afraid of losing mine.
I looked at your trust and saw a solution to my debt, status, and fear.
I looked at your mother’s independence and saw an obstacle.
I called that fatherhood.
It wasn’t.
Nora read it.
Then handed it to me.
“He finally got it?”
“Maybe.”
“What does maybe mean?”
“Understanding once is different from living differently.”
She nodded.
Daniel did live differently enough to maintain supervised, later unsupervised daytime contact with Nora as she grew.
No overnight visits until she requested at seventeen.
I disliked it.
