Chapter 18 - THE FAVORED COUSIN GROWS UP

At twelve, Osric’s cousin asked Hawthorne to stop calling any program “leadership development.”

Good.

She hated the word.

The independent adviser changed terminology.

Family education.

Shared service.

Financial literacy.

Community volunteering.

No titles.

At fifteen, she volunteered at a food bank.

Osric came too.

First hour:

He hated sorting cans.

Then he liked the forklift.

No trauma over “service.”

Because everyone served.

Adults.

Children.

Trustees.

Even my sister.

Nobody wore a maid uniform.

Nobody ate first because of status.

Afterward Osric said:

“Grandma would hate this.”

“Why?”

“She’d want someone giving orders.”

I smiled.

“There are people giving orders.”

The volunteer coordinator.

Safety matters.

“Yeah, but she works too.”

Exactly.
