Chapter 18 - TYLER AT EIGHTEEN

Tyler turned eighteen without inheriting a townhouse.
He laughed about it eventually.
At fourteen, the birthday had arrived in the middle of litigation.
Nothing magical happened.
Cake.
School.
Robotics kit.
The genuine schedule’s sale restriction simply matured.
That was it.
At eighteen, Tyler received his own beneficiary education account information.
Not huge.
Enough to help with college.
His mother had worried for a decade that he needed an empire.
He needed tuition and room to choose.
He studied industrial design.
Not baseball.
Not property management.
Karen struggled with that at first.
Then supported him.
He and Ella became more cousin-like.
Age gap remained.
He drove her to a middle-school track meet when Ben was stuck at work.
She made him hold her backpack.
No medal symbolism.
Just family.
At eighteen, he asked to see the old financial records.
Karen let him with therapist support.
He found the $74,000.
His face collapsed.
“She spent Ella’s money on me.”
Karen corrected:
“Adults misallocated family funds. You did not ask for that. The legal restoration is complete.”
“Still.”
“I chose expensive things because I wanted your life to prove I was okay.”
He looked at her.
“That’s a lot to put on a kid.”
“Yes.”
Good.
He did not apologize to Ella for existing.
We would not allow it.
He did tell her:
“If money ever feels weird between us, say it.”
Ella, twelve:
May you like
“Money always feels weird when adults talk.”
Accurate.
