Chapter 17 - DIANE’S FIRST LETTER

Diane wrote Ben first.
He read it.
Then Karen.
Then me.
Ella’s stayed sealed.
Diane wrote:
I believed your father’s plan was unfair to Karen.
No apology yet.
Then:
I believed Ben would always be stable and Karen would always need help.
That belief became permission in my mind.
Better.
Then:
When Ella was born, I knew activating her certificate would limit the flexibility I had used to help Karen and Tyler.
There.
Then:
I told myself a baby did not need an account more than a thirteen-year-old would eventually need school.
But Ella had been a baby then.
Tyler nine.
The chronology revealed how long Diane had been building excuses.
She admitted altering the certificate status.
Admitted substituting Schedule B.
Admitted copying Ben’s signature.
Then something I did not expect:
I did not hate Ella. I resented what her existence required me to stop controlling.
I read that twice.
Cruel honesty.
The medals?
Diane wrote:
When Karen threw them away, I saw the same hierarchy I had created. I defended Tyler because admitting Ella had done nothing wrong would have required admitting how much of the family had been organized around preventing Tyler from feeling second.
No plea for forgiveness.
She asked:
Please tell Ella when she is old enough that none of this was because she was better or worse than Tyler.
That part we could eventually use.
Ben did not answer for months.
Karen answered sooner.
Three lines:
I love you.
I am angry.
May you like
I need distance.
Healthy enough.
