After all appeals ended, police contacted Ethan about remaining physical evidence.
The brass key.
The broken latch.
The old kennel bowl.
The preserved dog bone.
He chose destruction for the food items.
The key interested him.
“Can I keep it?”
Legally, yes after release procedures.
He held it once.
Heavy brass.
Small.
The object that had locked a wall around him.
Then he changed his mind.
“Destroy it too.”
The evidence unit did.
No melting ceremony.
No speech.
No framed key above a fireplace.
A month later, Ethan sent me a photograph.
His daughter, Caroline Emma Sterling, age four, had locked herself in a bathroom by accident.
Her father had removed the doorknob.
