Chapter 12 - WILLIAM’S PART

William’s consequences were different.

He did not know Isabella planned confinement.

He did not know Schedule C had been suppressed.

He did know too little about documents he had signed.

That mattered.

The Sterling board conducted an independent governance review.

It found William repeatedly delegated trust-related approvals to family counsel without verification.

He signed refinancing representations stating protected consents were complete.

He did not personally forge them.

He did not profit secretly.

But he failed as CEO.

The board made his resignation permanent for at least three years.

He could apply later like any other candidate.

William accepted.

His assault diversion continued.

Counseling.

Community service.

No expungement until completion.

He did not complain.

At one session he told me later:

“I spent my whole life thinking control meant never looking uncertain.”

“What does it mean now?”

“I don’t know.”

“Better answer.”

He laughed.

Our friendship began there.

Not romance.

Not yet.

I was still a former employee and key witness.

He was still divorcing Isabella.

The power imbalance was obvious.

We kept distance.

His divorce was ugly but legally clear.

Isabella had no parental rights to Ethan.

She had been a stepmother.

No custody.

Her spousal claims against William were limited by the prenup and criminal forfeiture issues.

She retained lawful personal property.

She did not become penniless.

Justice did not require stripping every dress from her closet.

The house remained under Caroline’s trust.

William chose not to return.

He bought a smaller home near Ethan’s school.

Not small by ordinary standards.

Small by Sterling standards.

Ethan picked his bedroom.

First question:

“Does the closet lock?”

“No.”

He tested it.

Then:

“Can we take the door off?”

William did.

Maya later recommended putting it back when Ethan was ready.

Safety should not become permanent architecture if fear changes.

Six months later, Ethan asked for the closet door again because his toys looked messy.

They rehung it.

A hinge.

May you like

Four screws.

A small victory.
