Chapter 24 - THE ROOM BECOMES A ROOM

Sterling House underwent another renovation when Ethan was thirty-two.
The east gallery needed climate-control upgrades.
Architects asked whether he wanted the old alcove preserved.
He visited.
For years, the cavity had been open.
Bookshelves.
Bench.
Light.
No door.
A little girl from a foundation event sat there reading.
Ethan watched her.
Then said:
“Keep it.”
William looked surprised.
“You sure?”
“It isn’t the room anymore.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Trauma does not always require destruction.
Sometimes transformation works.
Sometimes removal.
Choice matters.
The painting never returned.
A landscape hung there instead.
No plaque.

Visitors knew nothing.
