Chapter 14 - HELEN’S ROLE

Helen’s criminal exposure remained narrower.

The attempted file deletion mattered.

Her communication routing mattered.

Her knowledge of unequal child treatment mattered.

But she had not created the fake document.

She had not signed invoices.

She had benefited from trust-funded family events.

Civil repayment possible.

Criminal intent needed proof.

She requested to meet me.

I agreed only with counsel.

She arrived without jewelry except her wedding ring.

“Are the children okay?”

“Yes.”

“Do they ask about me?”

“Sometimes.”

Her eyes filled.

“Can I see them?”

“Not yet.”

She nodded.

Then:

“I should have stopped Robert.”

“Which time?”

She looked down.

“Christmas parties. Summer work. Everything.”

“This isn’t about old traditions.”

“It is partly.”

She admitted she believed children should serve at family events.

“Why?”

“To keep them grounded.”

“Did Claire’s children serve?”

Silence.

“Why mine?”

“Robert was angry with you.”

There.

“So you punished them.”

“I thought they needed to understand family isn’t an ATM.”

I stared.

“Their trust paid for the party.”

She closed her eyes.

“I know now.”

“Did you know then?”

“No.”

I believed she might be telling the truth about exact bill.

“What did you know?”

“That Robert used branch accounts.”

“Whose?”

“Yours. Emily’s. I don’t know.”

“Did you know First Hartford replaced him?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know I wasn’t receiving statements?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell me?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Robert said you would weaponize the shares.”

I almost laughed.

“You mean vote differently.”

“Yes.”

There it was.

Difference treated as weapon.

Helen entered civil settlement discussions.

Repayment of improperly allocated personal and event expenses.

No trustee roles.

No control of beneficiary communications.

She wrote letters to the children.

Dr. Levin screened them.

First draft:

Grandma is sorry your father misunderstood our traditions.

Rejected.

Second:

I am sorry I made you work while other children played and ate. I should not have treated you differently.

Better.

Rebecca read it.

Samuel did not want to.

Jacob colored on the envelope.

All valid responses.
