Chapter 25 - THE DNA REPORT RETURNS

When Lily was twenty-one, court administrators asked whether sealed duplicate copies of her genetic report could be destroyed after retention requirements ended.
She had final say on our family copy.
We had one envelope in a locked file box.
I showed her.
“Do you want this?”
She looked at it.
“Does it still say Dad is Dad?”
“Yes.”
“Will that change if we throw it away?”
“No.”
“Then shred it.”
We did.
She laughed halfway through.
“What?”
“All that drama over paper.”
“Not paper.”
“What?”
“Control.”
She nodded.
