Chapter 17 - MARK AND SAMUEL

Mark met Samuel again.

Not to create a new father.

To ask medical questions.

“Heart disease?”

“Yes.”

“Cancer?”

“Colon cancer on my father’s side.”

“Anything neurological?”

“No known hereditary disorder.”

Practical.

Then Mark asked:

“Why didn’t you ever come for me?”

Samuel answered:

“Cowardice.”

No speech about respecting adoption.

No pretending Gerald alone prevented him.

“I chose my career.”

Mark nodded.

“That’s what I needed to know.”

Samuel said:

“I’m sorry.”

“I believe you.”

Not:

I forgive you.

Not:

Dad.

They developed limited contact.

Coffee twice a year.

Medical updates.

Eventually birthday cards signed Samuel.

Nothing more.

Gerald remained Mark’s father in memory.

May you like

Complicated father.

Still father.
