Chapter 21 - THE LEFTOVERS RULE
At seven, Lily still asked:
“Are these leftovers for me?”
Any time food came from the refrigerator.
The phrase had stuck.
We changed our language.
Not because leftovers were bad.
Because meaning mattered.
“Yesterday’s pasta.”
“Saved chicken.”
“Extra soup.”
Eventually she stopped asking whether food was what other people rejected.
At school, a teacher once said:
“Finish what’s on your plate before dessert.”
Lily panicked.
We explained her history privately.
The teacher adjusted language without removing all limits.
“Eat enough to feel satisfied, then we’ll talk dessert.”
Safe structure.
No deprivation.

No humiliation.
Healing was rarely dramatic.
