Chapter 23 - MARGARET AFTER PRISON
Margaret completed her sentence and supervision.
She no longer controlled the family trust.
She retained personal company shares after restitution.
Not poverty.
Not power.
She moved into a condominium.
Mark saw her first.
No Lily.
Margaret told him:
“I thought adoption made you vulnerable.”
Mark answered:
“You made me vulnerable by hiding it.”
“Yes.”
“I thought blood would protect the company.”
“You almost destroyed the family over blood.”
“Yes.”
No defensive sentence.
That mattered.
At thirteen, Lily chose one supervised meeting.
Margaret brought no gifts.
Good.
Lily asked:
“Why did you tie me?”
Margaret answered:
“Because I wanted your mother to feel ashamed.”
“Why use me?”
Margaret cried.
“Because I thought she would listen if you were the cost.”
Lily’s face hardened.
“That’s bad.”
“Yes.”
“Did you love me?”
“I did.”
“Then love didn’t stop you.”
“No.”
Lily nodded.
Meeting over.
They built a very limited relationship afterward.
