Chapter 9 - THE LAST EPISODE

Lily’s medical team reviewed the chart without assuming every abbreviation meant what investigators feared.
Some entries matched verified weights.
Some matched fundraiser posts.
Others aligned with episodes Taylor described as medical crises.
Archived blood samples from one hospital visit showed a sedative that had never been prescribed.
Another sample showed severe dehydration inconsistent with Taylor’s claim that Lily had been drinking normally.
Still, no single test explained the entire pattern.
Taylor remained missing.
Bank records showed she withdrew forty thousand dollars the morning after Lily’s rescue. Surveillance placed her at a branch wearing a cap and sunglasses.
She left in Evelyn’s second car.
The vehicle was found near a bus station.
Investigators believed she had switched transportation.
Evelyn asked for a plea discussion.
She said Taylor began the fundraiser after Lily lost weight during a stomach virus. Donations arrived quickly. Attention followed. Taylor became convinced that if Lily recovered, the family would lose everything.
“What did you do?” prosecutors asked.
“I made the paperwork match.”
“Did you restrict food?”
“I followed Taylor’s instructions.”
“Did you know Lily was hungry?”
Evelyn looked down.
“Yes.”
“Did you lock the freezer?”
“No.”
Her admission was incomplete and self-serving, but it opened records.
She identified a storage unit used for foundation equipment.
Inside, police found original donor gifts, unused medical supplies, prepaid cards, and boxes of child photographs sorted by appearance.
Pale.
Weak.
Crying.
Sleeping.
One locked case contained medications and droppers.
The contents went to a laboratory.
Near the back stood another tripod.
Its memory card held a rehearsal filmed the morning before my return.
Taylor coached Lily from behind the camera.
“Say you’re too tired to eat.”
“I’m hungry.”
“Hungry is not the story.”
Lily began crying.
Taylor stopped recording.
The next clip showed the empty freezer in our garage. Taylor tested the camera angle from the shelf.
She was preparing to film something there.
The file ended before Lily entered.
A final document in the storage unit contained a livestream script.
At the top, Taylor had written:
If she tells Ben the truth, say he approved everything.
The script included a prerecorded message in my voice, assembled from old videos.
Investigators played the first sentence.
It sounded like me saying:
May you like
We decided Lily must continue fasting.
The rest of the audio had not yet been recovered.
