Chapter 8 - THE ROOM BENEATH THE STAIRS

The hidden room looked like a hospital room in photographs.

In person, it was a stage.

A secondhand medical bed.

Plastic tubing.

A heart-monitor screen that played prerecorded rhythms.

Shelves of donated gowns.

A painted window panel.

A ring light positioned where a bedside lamp should have been.

Taylor had filmed updates there and presented them as hospital stays.

That discovery did not yet explain every abnormal blood test or Lily’s physical decline.

It proved the public story was manufactured.

Taylor disappeared before police could question her again.

Her attorney said she was seeking private treatment for trauma.

Her phone went offline.

Evelyn remained in the house until officers arrested her on financial and evidence-related charges. She denied harming Lily and blamed Taylor for the videos.

“I handled paperwork,” she said. “Taylor handled the child.”

The phrase was not a defense.

My own position worsened when investigators found me in raw footage from the blue room.

I stood beside the fake bed during a video test months earlier.

I remembered the evening.

Taylor said she was building a backdrop for donor thank-you messages because Lily hated cameras in public.

I adjusted a light and left.

In the clip, I joked, “Looks almost like the real thing.”

Those words made me look complicit.

I had recognized the imitation.

I had not asked why a child’s fundraiser needed it.

Family court postponed any expansion of my visitation.

My employer extended my leave.

Rachel told me anger would not solve the credibility problem.

“Your defense cannot be that you never looked closely.”

She was right.

A forensic review of Taylor’s cloud account recovered photo schedules.

Weigh-in day.

No-breakfast day.

Pale-light day.

Hospital-bed day.

The labels suggested deliberate symptom production, but investigators still needed medical proof and context.

Then police found a handwritten chart taped beneath the fake bed.

Dates appeared beside Lily’s weight, fluid intake, sleep hours, and unexplained abbreviations.

One column was marked COLD.

The final entry corresponded to the day I found Lily in the freezer.

Beside it Taylor had written:

Refused hunger scene. Needed stronger reset.

At the bottom of the page was another note.

Final episode before Ben returns.

The freezer had not been an isolated punishment.

It had been part of a schedule.
