Chapter 1 - THE CHAINED DOOR

Lily’s scream reached me before I had fully closed the front door.

“Dad!”

The sound came from the garage.

I dropped my travel bag and ran through the kitchen. The garage lights were off, but something struck metal in the darkness.

“Lily?”

“Dad!”

The upright freezer stood against the far wall, wrapped in a heavy chain. Its two handles had been locked together.

A small hand hit the inside of the door.

I grabbed the chain and pulled until the links cut into my palms. The lock held. A pair of pruning shears hung above the workbench. I drove the blades against the thinnest link until the metal snapped.

The freezer door opened.

Cold air poured over me.

Lily was curled between bags of frozen vegetables and stacked meat, her hoodie pulled over her head. Her face was pale except for the raw red around her lips.

“Dad! I’m so cold!”

I lifted her out.

Her body shook so violently that I could barely hold her. I crushed her against my chest, dragged off my sweater, and wrapped it around her.

“I’ve got you, baby. You’re safe now.”

She clung to my neck.

I carried her into the kitchen, rubbed her arms, and called emergency services. Her breathing came in short, painful gasps.

I crouched in front of her.

“What happened, sweetheart? Where’s your mom?”

She looked toward the house, then back at the freezer.

“She locked me in there when I said I was hungry. She said the cold would make me forget my hunger.”

My stomach turned.

“How long were you inside?”

“I don’t know.”

The garage door began rising behind us.

Taylor’s car rolled into the driveway.

Lily grabbed my sleeve.

Evelyn sat in the passenger seat.

Neither woman ran toward Lily when they saw her wrapped in my sweater.

Taylor stared first at the broken chain.

Then at my phone.

Then at our daughter.

“What did she tell you?” she asked.

Not Is she breathing?

Not Is she hurt?

What did she tell you?

Sirens sounded at the end of the street.

Evelyn stepped from the car holding a grocery bag filled with food.

Lily buried her face against my chest and whispered one more sentence.

“Don’t let Grandma take my picture.”
