Chapter 7 - THE RECORDS FROM A CLINIC THAT NEVER EXISTED

Federal investigators joined the case after the fundraiser records crossed state lines.

Northfield Metabolic Wellness had no patients, employees, or licensed physicians.

It existed as a billing shell.

Evelyn created it eighteen months earlier.

She had worked in medical billing before retirement and understood diagnostic codes well enough to make invoices look credible.

Taylor used those invoices to justify withdrawals from the foundation.

The money did not all go to luxury spending.

Some paid our mortgage.

Some covered ordinary bills.

Some went into investment accounts.

Some disappeared through cash withdrawals.

That mixture made the deception harder to recognize.

Real expenses hid inside false ones.

Police executed a search warrant at our house.

I was not allowed inside.

Photographs later showed locked kitchen cabinets, donor letters, lighting equipment, and stacks of child-size medical supplies.

A cabinet in Evelyn’s room contained blank laboratory templates.

Taylor claimed Evelyn created them only to organize legitimate results.

The actual laboratories disagreed.

At the hospital, physicians began a controlled nutrition plan. Lily’s body could not safely move from prolonged restriction to unrestricted eating without monitoring.

She gained less than a pound the first week.

That was expected.

I wanted fast recovery because slow recovery forced me to witness what had happened.

Lily asked when she could go home.

“Not yet.”

“Is Mom going to be there?”

“I don’t know.”

“Can the freezer be gone?”

“Yes.”

I promised before I knew whether the house would ever be ours again.

Rachel warned me that promises made from guilt could become another burden on a child.

I corrected myself at the next visit.

“The adults will make sure you live somewhere safe. I will work to make my home safe enough too.”

Lily nodded.

Then she asked why police had taken the blue room.

“What blue room?”

She looked frightened.

The therapist redirected her gently and ended the visit.

Search photographs contained no room painted blue.

But officers found a locked interior door behind shelving in the basement.

Taylor had told them it led to unfinished storage.

The key was missing.

A locksmith opened it the next morning.

Inside stood a hospital bed beneath studio lights.

The walls were painted blue.
