Chapter 24 - THE POST IN THE BACKYARD

The Whitmore house where Lily was chained was sold after Margaret’s conviction.

Mark bought out Daniel’s interest? Better: family estate sold to unrelated buyers.

Years later, the new owner renovated.

The cedar porch disappeared.

The post was removed.

I learned because a real-estate listing showed the backyard.

Lily was twenty-eight.

I asked whether she wanted to see.

She said no.

Then changed her mind.

We opened the listing together.

Glass doors.

New patio.

Outdoor kitchen.

No post.

She zoomed in.

“That’s it?”

“Probably.”

“It looked huge.”

“You were five.”

She stared.

“Do you know where the chain is?”

Evidence storage had returned it after appeals.

Rebecca asked years earlier whether I wanted custody of it.

I said no.

Margaret did not want it.

It was eventually destroyed with other nonessential evidence after legal retention expired.

Lily smiled.

“Good.”

No museum.

No symbolism.

Metal became scrap.

The dress with daisies remained in a sealed family box because I had kept it without thinking.

Lily found it once.

“Why do you still have this?”

“I kept all your little dresses.”

“Throw it away.”

I hesitated.

Then realized I was turning her trauma into my relic.

We donated usable fabric? The waist area had evidence marking long ago; legal retention over. Better discard.

We threw it away.
