Chapter 21 - THE TEST RESULTS LILY FINALLY READ

At seventeen, Lily asked to see the DNA reports.
Not because she doubted Daniel.
Because she wanted to understand the document everyone had once treated as destiny.
Rebecca arranged access to certified copies.
Two current legal tests.
The old Carrington private test.
The altered summary Margaret submitted.
Lily placed them side by side.
“So Grandma changed this?”
“She removed the probability and emphasized that the collection wasn’t legally verified.”
“Was that technically allowed?”
“Submitting a summary can be lawful if accurate. Hers was misleading in context.”
“Lawyers.”
“Yes.”
She pointed at 99.98 percent.
“She saw this when I was one.”
“Yes.”
“And still called me fake?”
“Yes.”
Lily leaned back.
“I thought the result would feel bigger.”
“What does it feel like?”
“Paper.”
Exactly.
She asked about Evan Cole.
I showed photographs.
Evan laughing at our wedding.
Evan holding a camera.
Evan with his boyfriend, Lucas, whom Margaret conveniently erased from every rumor because it weakened her story.
Lily laughed.
“Grandma thought you cheated with him?”
“She knew enough to create a rumor.”
“Did Daddy believe it?”
“For a while.”
“That hurts more.”
“Yes.”
Daniel and Lily discussed it separately.
He did not ask me to soften anything.
She told me later:
“Daddy said he was jealous because you trusted Evan with things you didn’t tell him.”
“True.”
“Did you?”
“Yes. Evan was my friend.”
“Were you going to leave Daddy?”
“Not then.”
“Did Daddy have reasons to feel insecure?”
“Yes.”
“Reasons to call me someone else’s kid?”
“No.”
She nodded.
Nuance.
Not absolution.
At eighteen, Lily legally gained more privacy control over trust and medical records.
She sealed the DNA reports from ordinary family access.
No future cousin needed to inspect them.
