Chapter 19 - MARGARET’S FIRST LETTER

Margaret wrote Lily from custody after two years.

The letter went through the child therapist.

I read it first because Lily was nine.

My darling Lily—

Already wrong.

The therapist flagged possessive language.

Then:

I am sorry I put the chain around you.

Clear.

Then:

I was angry with your mother.

Problem.

It still redirected cause.

Then:

I thought I was protecting the family.

Another justification.

We stored it.

No delivery yet.

Margaret wrote again six months later.

This version said:

Your mother did not make me chain you. Daniel did not make me. Mark did not make me. Money did not make me. I chose to use fear because I wanted everyone to obey me.

Better.

Then:

You never had to prove you belonged.

At ten, Lily chose to read that one.

She was quiet.

“Do I write back?”

“Only if you want.”

“Do I have to forgive?”

“No.”

“Can I be mad and sad?”

“Yes.”

She folded the letter.

“I’m mostly hungry.”

We made pasta.

The next year, Lily asked for one supervised video call.

Margaret looked older.

No pearls.

Lily stared.

“Why did you call me cheater kid?”

Margaret answered:

“Because I wanted people to doubt your mother and your place in the trust.”

“Did you know Daddy was Daddy?”

Margaret took a breath.

“I had a test that strongly suggested he was.”

“So yes?”

“I should have treated it as yes until legal testing.”

Lily frowned.

“Adult answer.”

Margaret corrected herself.

“Yes. I believed Daniel was probably your biological father.”

“Then you lied.”

“Yes.”

The call lasted twelve minutes.

Lily requested no second call for another two years.

May you like

Margaret accepted.

That was the first evidence of change I trusted.
