Chapter 23 - DANIEL’S SECOND FAMILY

Daniel remarried when Lily was twenty-three.

Her name was Maya Collins.

A teacher.

No family-business connection.

I met her because Lily asked us all to have dinner before the wedding.

Maya was nervous.

I was more nervous.

Daniel looked older.

Kinder maybe.

Or I was no longer seeing him through marriage.

Maya asked me privately:

“Is there anything I should know?”

I almost laughed at the size of the question.

Instead:

“Daniel avoids conflict until avoidance becomes a decision.”

He heard me.

“I’m working on that.”

“Good.”

Maya said:

“I’ll find out.”

Healthy.

Lily served as a witness at their courthouse ceremony.

No grand Whitmore event.

Margaret attended lunch afterward.

She behaved.

Mark and Jessica came.

For one afternoon, the family occupied a room without ranking children.

That should not have felt revolutionary.

It did.

Daniel and Maya later had a son.

Lily asked whether his birth changed her trust share.

“No.”

The reformed documents treated each branch transparently.

No one child displaced another through secret formulas.

Lily looked relieved.

Then met her baby brother and forgot money.

Good.

I dated.

Loved.

Never remarried.

Not because Daniel ruined marriage permanently.

May you like

Because the relationships that followed did not need it.

My life was not an unfinished story waiting for another husband.
