Chapter 22 - MARGARET COMES HOME
Margaret completed the custodial portion of her sentence in her seventies and entered supervised release.
Her money was reduced by restitution and legal costs.
She still had enough to live comfortably.
She moved into a condominium.
No trust role.
No company authority.
No control over education funds.
She requested contact with Lily.
Lily was twenty.
She agreed to lunch in a public restaurant.
I did not attend.
Daniel waited nearby only because Lily asked.
Margaret brought no gift.
Good.
Lily told me afterward.
“She said she almost brought pearls.”
“Why didn’t she?”
“Therapist told her gifts can be pressure.”
I laughed.
Progress arrives through strange channels.
Margaret apologized again.
Lily asked:
“Did you hate Mom?”
Margaret said:
“Sometimes.”
Honest.
“Why?”
“Because she did not need my approval as much as I wanted her to.”
That answer surprised me when Lily repeated it.
Margaret had finally located a motive beneath paternity and money.
Control needs emotional fuel.
Lily asked whether she loved Daniel.
“Yes.”
“Then why make him doubt his wife?”
Margaret answered:
“Because when Daniel trusted Claire more than me, I experienced it as losing him.”
Lily said:
“That sounds like a you problem.”
Margaret laughed.
Apparently.
They met twice a year after that.
No private holidays.
No financial conversations.
Relationship by consent.
I never rebuilt a relationship with Margaret beyond civil greetings at shared events.
