Chapter 23 - ROBERT OUTSIDE THE COMPANY

Robert completed his custodial sentence and supervision requirements.

He lived in a condominium.

Comfortable.

Not the old estate.

That house had been sold during legal and financial restructuring.

Not punishment.

Robert needed liquidity for loans, taxes, restitution, and ordinary life decisions.

He retained substantial lawful wealth.

No poverty morality play.

He had no Reed Industrial role.

Blackmere removed the Reed name from two operating brands over time.

Employees barely noticed.

The company became less of a family monument and more of a business.

Good.

Robert requested mediated contact with me.

I agreed.

Not Lily.

Me.

First time we sat across from each other in four years.

He looked older.

“I thought you would destroy the company.”

“I sold it.”

He almost smiled.

“I know.”

“For more money.”

“I know.”

“With employee protections.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Then:

“You could have asked the board to replace me.”

“I didn’t think they would.”

“You could have negotiated.”

“I thought you’d win.”

“So you hurt Lily.”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

No euphemism.

“Why Rebecca?”

“She needed me.”

There.

He understood how to select dependencies.

“Why Mom?”

“She believed me.”

“Why me?”

“You didn’t.”

That was the entire family system.

He built control from people’s dependence.

I became dangerous when I stopped needing approval.

Lily became useful because I loved her.

Robert asked:

“Will I ever see her?”

“I don’t know.”

He nodded.

May you like

No demand.

That was the first acceptable thing he did in the conversation.
