Chapter 19 - LINDA SEES LILY

Lily was six and a half when she asked:

“Can Grandma Linda come to my birthday?”

I froze.

“Why?”

“She sent card.”

Through approved channel.

Simple card.

No guilt.

No:

I miss you.

Just:

Happy birthday. I hope your day has purple cake.

Lily liked purple cake.

“Do you want her there?”

“Maybe not party.”

Good.

We arranged one supervised meeting afterward.

Public garden.

Therapist nearby initially.

Linda arrived early.

No gifts except a small coloring book approved beforehand.

Lily stayed beside me.

First question:

“Why didn’t you help?”

Linda cried immediately.

“I cared more about stopping the adults from fighting than I did about looking at what happened to you.”

Lily frowned.

“I was hurt.”

“Yes.”

“You saw.”

“Yes.”

“Then dumb.”

Linda laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Children remain efficient.

Then Lily asked:

“Did you know Aunt hit?”

“No.”

“Grandpa plan?”

“I knew he wanted Daddy angry. I didn’t know he planned to hurt you.”

“Then when saw?”

“I should have stopped everything.”

“Yeah.”

No hug.

At the end Lily waved.

That was all.

Months later, another meeting.

Relationship grew slowly.

Not because grandmother status guaranteed it.

Because Linda behaved differently over time.
