Chapter 13 - LINDA WITHOUT ROBERT’S STORY
Linda was never charged with hurting Lily.
She had not.
She did receive consequences elsewhere.
Reed Industrial removed her from the family charitable council because she had participated in the planned provocation and then minimized it.
No criminal conviction.
No invented liability.
Family court required supervised contact if Lily ever resumed a relationship.
Linda entered therapy.
Not because I demanded.
Because she wanted a chance someday.
Six months after Robert’s trial, I agreed to meet her.
She brought no gifts.
Good.
“I spent my whole marriage believing Robert’s fear was information.”
I waited.
“If he said the company was at risk, I believed it.”
“Even when financial statements said otherwise?”
“I didn’t read them.”
There.
Same disease in a different family.
“What did you think would happen at the party?”
“You would yell. Maybe hit Robert.”
“And you were willing to help create that.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I thought if you were removed, the sale would close and Robert would calm down.”
I laughed without humor.
“Everyone kept trying to regulate him by sacrificing someone else.”
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Then:
“When I saw Lily, I knew something had gone wrong. I still tried to protect the plan for maybe thirty seconds.”
“Long enough.”
“Yes.”
No defense.
She asked:
“Can I ever see her?”
“I don’t know.”
“Will you tell her I’m sorry?”
“No.”
She looked surprised.
“That apology belongs to you. If she ever wants to hear it, you can say it.”
Good.
No using me as a delivery system.
Linda nodded.
That was the beginning.
