The divorce finalized three years after Lily’s birthday.
Not because courts move symbolically.
Because custody, finances, business valuations, and appeals take time.
The settlement gave me primary residential custody.
Richard received substantial parenting time under continuing safeguards.
Decision-making shared for ordinary issues, with medical tie-breaking temporarily mine due earlier conflict.
Olivia’s contact depended on Lily’s therapeutic readiness.
Marital assets divided.
Trust principal excluded.
Richard kept his Vance Meridian interest.
I received my share of actual marital property.
No mansion taken.
No company seized.
No billionaire revenge.
Then came one final issue.
Richard asked that Lily use only Vance as her surname.
I wanted Rowan-Vance.
Not Sterling.
My mother’s chosen name mattered more to me than headlines.
We compromised.
Lily remained Lily Vance legally.
She could choose later.
That surprised Richard.
“You could make her a Sterling.”
“She isn’t a brand.”
He looked down.
At the final hearing, the judge asked whether both parties understood.
“Yes.”
Richard turned toward me outside.
“I really thought you’d destroy me.”
“I wanted to sometimes.”
“What stopped you?”
“Lily.”
He nodded.
Then:
“And the money?”
“What about it?”
“You could have.”
“I could have made your life expensive. That isn’t the same as being right.”
He looked toward the courthouse doors.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“Do you forgive me?”
“No.”
The answer no longer shook.
He accepted it.
That was progress.
