Chapter 21 - OLIVIA’S PLAN
Olivia filed for grandparent visitation.
She said I was using wealth to cut Lily off from family.
Before the cake, Olivia saw Lily almost weekly.
After, no contact under temporary orders.
Her petition might have had emotional force if not for messages recovered from Richard.
Olivia:
If Maya leaves after Vanessa comes out, let her. Lily stays with us.
Richard:
She’ll take Lily.
Olivia:
Then we document every meltdown. Courts don’t like unstable mothers.
Richard:
I know.
Olivia:
Vanessa should keep filming.
This predated the party by two months.
No plan for cake assault.
A plan for narrative.
Olivia had also offered to pay Richard’s legal fees if he sought primary custody.
Why?
Partly control.
Partly fear.
Her husband had died when Richard was fourteen.
She made Richard the center of her life.
She viewed spouses as temporary.
Grandchildren as continuation.
At deposition, Helen asked:
“Did you believe Maya was dangerous?”
“Emotionally.”
“To Lily?”
“She makes everything dramatic.”
“Specific harm?”
Olivia struggled.
“She argues.”
“Does Richard?”
“Yes.”
“Why is Maya’s argument instability?”
Olivia stopped.
Because women’s anger had different meaning in her family too.
The court denied immediate grandparent visitation.
Future therapeutic contact remained possible if Lily wanted and Olivia completed counseling.

No permanent ban based solely on being unpleasant.
But no automatic grandparent right over a child who watched her applaud assault.
