Chapter 23 - THE ASSAULT CASE

Richard’s criminal case was narrower than social media expected.
Battery.
Hair pulling.
Shoving my face into the cake.
No deadly weapon.
No serious bodily injury.
First charged offense.
Strong video.
He entered a plea after months.
He admitted intentionally using physical force during the argument and causing injury.
He received probation, required intervention programming, community service, no-contact conditions outside parenting channels, and a suspended custodial term contingent on compliance.
Some wanted prison.
I understood.
The legal result did not feel like the internet’s sense of justice.
It was still real.
The judge said:
“Humiliation is not discipline between spouses.”
Richard looked at me.
He apologized publicly.
I did not respond publicly.
In private parenting therapy months later, he said:
“I thought if you looked ridiculous, I’d feel less ridiculous.”
That was the first explanation I believed.
The argument with Olivia.
The affair.
The money.
My refusal.
His family watching.
He felt exposed.
So he made me smaller.
Not because I was secretly wealthy.
May you like
Because he believed I could be made smaller.
That distinction mattered more than every headline.
