Chapter 11 - VANESSA’S ORIGINAL VIDEO

Vanessa contacted Helen.

She wanted protection from a civil privacy claim and possible subpoena sanctions.

In exchange, she offered the original birthday files.

Helen did not promise immunity from anything.

She could not.

Vanessa’s full video began sixteen minutes before the cake.

Richard walked beside her near the garage.

His voice was low.

“She’s going to make a scene when Mom announces the sleepover.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Good content.”

“I’m serious.”

“What do you want?”

“Keep the camera on Maya.”

“Why?”

“She gets crazy when she thinks people are judging her parenting.”

Vanessa kissed his cheek.

“Maybe don’t sleep with me at your daughter’s party then.”

He pushed her away playfully.

“Just film.”

That line changed the custody case.

Richard expected conflict.

Maybe wanted it.

Not necessarily the cake assault in advance.

But he wanted evidence of my reaction.

Later, before Olivia’s announcement, Richard said:

“Make sure you get her face.”

Vanessa complied.

Then came the shove.

After I left, the recording continued.

Richard:

“Did you get it?”

Vanessa:

“Everything.”

Olivia:

“Post it before she tells her version.”

My stomach turned.

They were not shocked.

Their first response was narrative.

Vanessa said in deposition that Richard had talked for months about divorce.

“He wanted Maya to look unstable.”

“Why?” Helen asked.

“Custody.”

“Anything else?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“He said his mother would help him financially if Lily lived mostly with him.”

Olivia’s support mattered.

Richard owed her $18,000.

She had offered to cover legal fees and housing if he “protected Lily from Maya’s moods.”

Again, not hidden billions.

Ordinary family leverage.

Vanessa admitted she enjoyed humiliating me.

Why cooperate now?

“Because Richard told everyone the affair was my fault.”

Not noble.

Still useful.

Witnesses do not need pure motives for evidence to exist.

The court authenticated the file independently.

Richard’s supervised visits continued.

Lily saw him twice weekly in a family center.

At the first visit, she asked:

“Why did you put Mommy in cake?”

The therapist later documented his answer.

“Daddy got too angry.”

Good beginning.

Then:

“Mommy was making everybody upset.”

The therapist interrupted.

“No blame-sharing with Lily.”

Richard became angry.

The session ended early.

Parenting was not improving as quickly as his public apologies suggested.
