Howerin Family Hospitality dropped “Family” from its public brand.
Not because courts ordered it.
Because employees were tired of explaining headlines.
The company became Howerin Hospitality Group.
Grace Nolan remained CEO.
An independent chair led the board.
Employee ownership expanded.
William’s reserve kept its twenty-four-percent block temporarily, but fiduciaries began considering diversification.
Too much of a child’s future sat inside one troubled company.
They sold five percent over three years.
Then another four.
Proceeds moved into diversified investments.
William would not be trapped into preserving a hotel empire because his grandfather built it.
That mattered.
Howerin closed the failed members club.
Sold the condominium.
Settled with Northcrest under a revised financing package.
The lender obtained no access to William’s trust.
Two hotels were sold.
One hundred four employees lost positions through consolidation.
Severance helped.
Not enough for everyone.
A banquet manager confronted me after a public meeting.
“You got your kid’s money back. I got unemployment.”
I did not say:
It wasn’t my fault.
That would have been useless.
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re still rich.”
“I’m financially secure.”
“Exactly.”
He walked away.
