Chapter 11 - HOWERIN WITHOUT THE RESERVE

Grace assembled emergency financing.
Not from my father.
Not from some hidden billionaire.
From three regional banks and an asset-based lender willing to finance hotel receivables without using William’s reserve.
The interest rate was ugly.
The covenants were stricter.
The money kept payroll running.
Northcrest remained a possible long-term lender if Howerin sold Lifestyle assets and cleaned governance.
Drew hated the plan because it removed family control.
The independent board approved it anyway.
Margaret remained a shareholder but lost executive authority pending investigation.
Drew was suspended from corporate development.
Silas lost access to company accounts.
Grace became interim CEO.
I was offered no job.
Good.
William’s twenty-four percent did not make me qualified to run hotels.
His independent fiduciary voted based on company and beneficiary interests.
I could provide information.
Not orders.
That separation saved me from becoming a mirror image of Margaret.
Meanwhile, the prosecutor finalized my diversion agreement.
Counseling.
Community service.
Restitution for Cody’s medical expenses.
No direct contact with Cody.
No further violence.
If completed, dismissal.
I signed.
Drew called it proof I was dangerous.
I did not answer publicly.
William asked why I was cleaning equipment at a recreation center on Saturdays.
“Because I hurt someone when I was angry.”
“Cody?”
“Yes.”
“Does he have to do something too?”
“Adults are handling what he did.”
“Did he get the Switch?”
“No.”

That pleased him far too much.
I tried not to smile.
