Chapter 6

Daniel searched his jacket pockets.

Nothing.

He searched the inside pocket.

Nothing.

The bride's face tightened.

“Other pocket.”

Daniel hesitated.

Then he reached into the opposite side.

Nothing.

A few guests exchanged glances.

Bernice looked relieved.

“See?”

Adria did not respond.

She was watching Callum.

The boy was still staring at Daniel.

Not at his face.

At his jacket.

“Mom,” he whispered.

Adria crouched.

“What?”

“It's there.”

“Where?”

Callum pointed.

Daniel immediately stepped backward.

The bride saw it.

“What is he pointing at?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Nothing.”

Callum's voice became stronger.

“Your pocket.”

Daniel looked down.

His hand moved toward his tuxedo again.

The bride stepped between him and the exit.

“Don't.”

Daniel froze.

Adria felt something shift in the room.

The accusation had become something more serious.

Bernice looked from Daniel to Callum.

Then she slowly lowered the empty velvet ring box.

“Search him.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“I already emptied my pockets.”

“Not completely,” Callum whispered.

Everyone heard him.

Daniel stared at the child.

For the first time that evening, anger flashed across his face.

Adria immediately moved closer to Callum.

“You don't have to say anything else.”

But Callum shook his head.

“I saw him.”

Daniel looked at the ballroom doors.

Two security staff had finally appeared.

The bride pointed toward Daniel.

“Please check him.”

Daniel's shoulders dropped.

He looked trapped.

Then something struck the polished floor.

A tiny metallic sound.
