That afternoon, Adria received a message from Bernice.
She did not answer immediately.
The message was simple.
I understand if you don't want to see me yet.
Adria read it twice.
Then another message arrived.
But I want to earn your trust again.
Adria looked at Callum.
He was sitting on the living-room floor, moving the compass around in his hands.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“What's that?”
“Grandma texted.”
Callum became quiet.
“What did she say?”
Adria didn't hide it.
“She said she wants to earn our trust again.”
Callum thought.
“Does she get to?”
Adria smiled faintly.
“That's up to you.”
Callum looked at the compass.
“Can she start by saying sorry?”
“She already did.”
“Then maybe she can say it again.”
Adria nodded.
“Maybe.”
It was not forgiveness.
