Chapter 25 - THE WATCH AGAIN

At thirty, Amos found the smartwatch in one of my storage boxes.

Battery dead.

Plastic scratched.

Blue band faded.

“Wow.”

“What?”

“This thing.”

I knew immediately.

He turned it over.

“Did it really record everything?”

“Enough.”

“Can I hear?”

His choice.

The files still existed in legal archives.

I had one personal copy encrypted.

I asked:

“Why?”

“I want to know if I remember right.”

We listened together.

Not all forty-seven minutes.

Enough.

His tiny voice.

Hungry.

Scared.

Eudora.

Benedict.

My own entrance.

GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY CHILD.

Amos stopped the audio.

“I sounded so little.”

“You were.”

“I remember being bigger.”

“Memory is strange.”

He looked at the watch.

“Did this save us?”

“No.”

He seemed surprised.

“It helped prove what happened.”

“Then?”

“You saved yourself first. You pressed the button.”

He smiled.

Then:

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“That matters more.”

Correct.

He chose not to keep the watch.

We recycled the electronics.
