Chapter 19 - AMOS MEETS HIS FATHER DIFFERENTLY

Benedict became a good father slowly.
No grand gesture.
He showed up.
Read school notices.
Cooked.
Learned to stop saying:
Don’t make people mad.
At nine, Amos spilled milk at Benedict’s apartment.
He froze.
Benedict grabbed a towel.
“That’s why towels exist.”
No punishment.
No food removed.
Amos told me afterward.
Proud.
At twelve:
“Dad is different.”
“Yes.”
“Do you still hate him?”
“I never hated him.”
“You divorced.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Love and trust are different.”
He thought.
“That’s inconvenient.”
Very.
Benedict eventually remarried.
A teacher named Claire.
I liked her.
Irritating.
Amos liked her more.
May you like
Fine.
Our family grew without pretending the old one did not break.
