Chapter 13 - THE WATER IN THE SERVER ROOM

Eleanor claimed she entered the corridor because she smelled smoke.
No smoke alarm activated.
The pipe had been loosened with a tool.
Water damaged two storage racks before emergency crews shut the valve.
Cloud backups preserved most files.
One local archive contained original signatures and private board messages.
Forensic recovery would take weeks.
Eleanor was charged with violating the preservation order and suspected evidence tampering.
She was released under restrictions because prosecutors had not yet proved she caused the leak.
The mansion remained under receiver control.
Julian moved into a hotel.
Chloe stayed with relatives while negotiating cooperation.
I returned to the mansion once under police supervision to collect Lily’s clothes.
Her room had been searched.
Stuffed animals were opened.
Drawers emptied.
A small wooden box from my mother was missing.
Inside had been one of the few photographs of Gabriel holding me after the kidnapping.
Julian knew I kept it there.
A housekeeper remembered Chloe carrying a similar box toward the study.
Police found it in Julian’s hotel safe.
He claimed he protected it from investigators.
Inside the lid, beneath the photograph, my mother had written a trust reference number.
Julian had found the number three years earlier.
That was how he identified the Ashford Maternal Trust.
The family’s investigation into me had not ended with a background report.
It continued inside my bedroom and our daughter’s room.
I made my own consequential mistake that night.
I called Julian from the hidden phone.
“You searched Lily’s belongings.”
“I was looking for documents you hid.”
“You used our child to reach my trust.”
“You used your trust to infiltrate my family.”
“I didn’t know it existed.”
“No one will believe that.”
His certainty enraged me.
I told him the cloud backups had survived the flood.
That information was not public.
He ended the call.
Within an hour, someone attempted to access the backup administrator account from an overseas server.
The receiver blocked the intrusion.
Investigators traced the credentials to a consultant who had worked for Julian.
My warning gave them a new crime attempt to investigate.
It also revealed the evidence source.
The consultant deleted local devices and fled before police arrived.
My attorney did not soften the criticism.
“You wanted him afraid.”
“Yes.”
“And fear made him move.”
“Yes.”
“It also gave him notice.”
I knew.
Lily’s safety required discipline more than satisfaction.
The consultant was detained at the airport the next morning.
His laptop contained no Sterling files.
It did contain instructions from Julian:
If Victoria mentions cloud survival, activate clean protocol.
Julian had prepared another response in advance.
He expected me to discover the backups eventually.

The clean protocol referred to more than data.
It included a school pickup authorization for Lily.
