Chapter 1 - THE TEETH ON THE MARBLE

Chloe’s palm struck my daughter before I reached her.

The sound cracked through the foyer.

Lily’s head snapped sideways. Two tiny baby teeth flew from her mouth, bounced once on the polished marble, and rolled beneath the edge of the staircase.

For half a second, nobody moved.

Blood filled Lily’s mouth.

“Your daughter ruined my dress!” Chloe screamed.

A red stain marked the front of her evening gown where Lily had apparently spilled fruit punch. Chloe stared at the stain as though it justified the child trembling in front of her.

I dropped to my knees.

“Open your mouth, sweetheart.”

Lily tried. Blood ran over her lower lip and onto her dress.

I wiped it with my sleeve, gathered her into my arms, and felt her body lock against mine.

Julian stood only a few feet away.

My husband did not look at the teeth on the floor.

He adjusted one cuff link.

Then the other.

“Control your child,” he said. “Or put a leash on it.”

The words struck a place inside me that had already been breaking for years.

Lily buried her face against my neck.

Behind Julian, Eleanor entered from the dining room. Her gaze moved from Chloe’s stained dress to Lily’s bleeding mouth.

Judgment came before concern.

“What did that child do now?”

“Chloe hit her,” I said.

Eleanor raised her hand.

Not toward Chloe.

Toward me.

I caught her wrist before it reached my face.

“It’s over, sweetheart,” I whispered to Lily. “No one will ever hurt you again.”

Julian stepped forward with both fists clenched.

I stood without releasing Eleanor.

“Lower your hand, Julian.”

His expression changed.

He had heard fear in my voice before.

He had never heard its absence.

I released Eleanor, shifted Lily onto one hip, and tore the red string bracelet from my wrist.

Julian stared at it.

“What are you doing?”

I crouched beside the staircase and lifted the loose floorboard hidden beneath the lowest step.

The black phone lay exactly where I had left it.

Chloe stopped shouting.

Eleanor’s face tightened.

Julian moved toward me.

“Give me that.”

I pressed the emergency contact.

Arthur answered before the first full ring.

“Victoria?”

I looked directly at my husband.

“Tell my father I’m finished hiding.”

Silence followed.

Then Arthur said, “Take Lily away from the windows.”

Julian lunged.

I stepped back and raised my free arm between us.

The mansion lights went out.

Emergency lamps glowed along the floor.

Outside, engines approached through the circular drive.

Julian’s fury turned to disbelief.

“Who did you call?”

I held Lily tighter.

I did not answer.

Because revealing the name would reveal everything I had buried to build this marriage.

And I had already learned what the Sterling family did when they believed a truth belonged to them.
