Chapter 11 - MY FATHER’S OFFER

Gabriel requested a private meeting.
I agreed only with attorneys present.
He placed a protective agreement in front of me.
It would move Lily and me to the Ashford estate, assign full security, freeze all public communications, and authorize his family office to direct litigation strategy.
I read every page.
“You want control.”
“I want survival.”
“You want me to surrender decisions to you while you call it protection.”
“For ninety days.”
“Julian used temporary language too.”
His face hardened.
“Do not compare me to that man.”
“Then stop asking for the same thing with better stationery.”
Arthur looked down.
Gabriel withdrew the agreement.
Not because he changed his mind.
Because he understood I would walk out.
The forged disclosure on his server required investigation.
Access logs showed an outside contractor entered the archive three years earlier during a cybersecurity migration.
The contractor later joined Sterling Group.
His name was Nolan Price.
He now reported to Chloe.
That connected the forgery to Sterling.
It did not clear my father’s office of negligence.
Gabriel had concealed the breach to avoid reputational damage.
“If you had reported it, Julian might not have been able to use the file,” I said.
“We believed no sensitive trust documents were taken.”
“You believed what protected your company.”
“I made a wrong judgment.”
It was the closest my father came to apology.
I needed more.
I also needed the truth.
The independent bank confirmed I had never received formal disclosure. The forged form could not remove my trust rights.
But its existence revealed how long Julian’s plan had been developing.
Three years.
Before Chloe entered his apartment.
Before the shell transfers.
Before he began calling me paranoid.
At supervised visitation, Julian stopped pretending.
“You could save Sterling.”
“The receiver can save legitimate operations.”
“You could stop Alderbridge.”
“I cannot erase default.”
“You can influence your father.”
“You married me because of him.”
“I married you because I loved you.”
“And investigated me before proposing.”
“I needed to know who I was bringing into my family.”
“No. You needed to know what I was worth.”
His face changed.
For once, I had struck the true point.
That night Chloe requested a meeting with prosecutors.
She offered information about Julian, Eleanor, and the forged signatures.
In exchange, she wanted reduced charges for assaulting Lily.
Her attorney described the slap as “an impulsive act under emotional pressure.”
The two teeth on the marble disagreed with the word impulsive.
Still, cooperation could matter.
Chloe’s first disclosure was explosive.
Julian had instructed her to provoke me.
He had not instructed her to hit Lily.
According to Chloe, the plan was to ruin her own dress, accuse Lily, and record me becoming violent.
When I remained calm, Chloe escalated.
May you like
Julian watched.
And did nothing.
