Chapter 12 - THE CHILD THEY USED AS BAIT

Chloe’s account matched parts of the evidence.

Her dress had been altered so a hidden thread could release the cup from Lily’s hand.

A tailor confirmed Vanessa—Chloe’s assistant—requested the modification.

The fruit punch was chosen because the stain would look dramatic.

A foyer camera had been redirected toward the staircase where I was expected to stand.

Julian’s response protocol contained three planned stages:

Accusation.

Provocation.

Emergency custody filing.

The plan anticipated that I might push Chloe or strike Eleanor.

My reaction would support the claim that I was unstable and dangerous.

Chloe insisted the slap was not planned.

She lost control when Lily laughed nervously after the cup spilled.

“I thought she was laughing at me.”

“She was five,” the prosecutor said.

Chloe cried.

Tears did not transform the child into an equal participant.

Her cooperation exposed the financial motive.

Julian needed control of Lily’s shares to approve hotel transfers and refinance debt.

Eleanor needed the money to cover losses from private investments.

Chloe’s shell consulting companies received more than four million dollars.

Some went to luxury expenses.

Some returned to Sterling accounts to hide insolvency.

They had built financial survival from circular transfers and false valuations.

The hidden phone contained photographs of two relevant agreements.

But I had taken them from Julian’s study without a warrant.

My access as a spouse did not automatically make every private corporate record admissible.

Investigators needed originals from independent sources.

The lender, trustee, and Sterling servers became essential.

I asked Chloe why Julian brought her into our home.

“He said the marriage was already over.”

“When?”

“Last year.”

“He slept beside me last week.”

Her eyes lowered.

“He said you were only waiting for the right moment to reveal your family.”

Julian had told each of us a version that justified betrayal.

To Chloe, I was a manipulative heiress.

To me, she was a harmless family friend.

To Eleanor, we were both tools for saving Sterling.

Lily’s therapist prepared her for another forensic interview.

She spoke about the foyer only when ready.

“Daddy told me to stand near Chloe.”

“Why?” the interviewer asked.

“So Mommy would come.”

“Did he say what would happen?”

“He said Chloe was going to pretend.”

“Pretend what?”

“That I was naughty.”

Lily twisted her dress.

“Then Chloe wasn’t pretending.”

The interviewer stopped when Lily began crying.

No one demanded more.

That evening the independent receiver entered Sterling headquarters.

One server room had been flooded by a burst pipe.

The leak began twenty minutes after Chloe’s proffer became known.

Security footage showed Eleanor entering the utility corridor with a maintenance key.
