Chapter 25 - ELEANOR’S DEATH

Eleanor died at seventy-nine in medical custody.
She had served much of her sentence.
A final letter came to Julian.
Another to Lily.
None to me.
Lily read hers at twenty-one.
She shared one paragraph.
I thought family survival required everyone to accept the place I assigned them. By the time I understood that control was not love, I had lost the right to ask you to believe me.
Lily folded it.
“Do you believe her?”
“I believe she understood that sentence when she wrote it.”
“Same thing?”
“No.”
She nodded.
No forced forgiveness.
