Chapter 19 - JULIAN AFTER STERLING

Sterling Heritage emerged from restructuring as Sterling Hospitality Group.
Family ownership fell below control.
Employee and institutional investors held larger stakes.
Independent directors governed.
Julian’s shares remained but carried restrictions during supervised release.
He was not rehired as president.
He worked first as a hotel operations consultant.
Smaller company.
No private driver.
No cuff-link performances.
He hated it.
Then adapted.
Eventually he became operations director at an unrelated hospitality firm after disclosing his conviction.
He developed a reputation for obsessive consent documentation.
Irony had become compliance.
At one parenting exchange, I said:
“You know you don’t have to turn every lunch permission slip into a contract.”
He smiled.
“Occupational trauma.”
“Fair.”
We could joke by then.
Not about Lily’s slap.
Not about fraud.
May you like
About bureaucracy.
Progress has strange forms.
