Chapter 26 - WHAT GAGE KEPT

I kept very little physical evidence from Mara’s case.

One photograph.

The service invoice.

Why the service invoice?

I don’t know.

Maybe because it represented the terrible middle ground.

Mara tried to fix the problem.

The mechanic tried.

Not enough.

No villainy in that page.

Only human limits.

Eventually I threw it away.

Poppy asked:

“Why now?”

“Because I’m tired of storing proof of things nobody disputes anymore.”

She nodded.

Claire and I moved near Poppy.

Not into her house.

Boundaries.

Sophie visited constantly.

I taught her terrible card games.

She cheated.

I respected it within limits.

One winter evening, she asked:

“Grandpa, did you hit Celestine?”

Poppy groaned.

“Who told you?”

“Internet.”

Of course.

I answered.

“Yes.”

“Because she burned Dolly?”

“And threatened your mom.”

“Was it okay?”

“No.”

She looked disappointed.

“But you were hero.”

“No.”

“Dad—” Poppy stopped herself. “Grandpa saved me from fire stuff.”

“I pulled the doll out and got your mom away from danger. That was protecting.”

“And slap?”

“That was anger after I already had control of the situation.”

Sophie thought.

“So movie would make it cool.”

“Yes.”

“But real life gives homework.”

Poppy started laughing.

“Exactly.”

Anger-management course became family folklore.

Not shame.

May you like

Accountability.

Good.
